They all have their symbols and traditions...
the definition of a cult is as followed:
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
All the other reigions have the same ideas...so why are mormons picked on about being a cult so much?

Because Joseph Smith... MADE IT ALL UP!
Taking back from the dictionary (because it states that gay means happy and ***** is a bundle of sticks), let's examine the HUMAN definition of the word "Cult".
When someone--a religious zealot in this example--CREATES a religion out of nowhere, it's a cult. Now, The "Church" of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a very large constituant base. However, all of it is based on a farce.
According to their "creation" story, Joseph Smith went into the forest and saw "God" who led him to the "Golden Tablets of Moroni". Then, he took his top hat and a rock with several holes in it (called the "Scrying Stone" but they condemn witchcraft, go fig) and read the tablets aloud to his scribe. The scribe took the first "gospel" home to his wife who put it on the shelf and said "If Joseph Smith tells the 'truth' then let him write this again". Smart woman. When the scribe returned to Joseph Smith about it, he said "Well, then God did not wish that gospel to be in the book" and moved on!
Tell me, where's the truth in that? I say Joseph Smith went into the forest and found SHROOMS!

From a religious standpoint hate and contention come from Satan, and so from a religious standpoint the reason that Mormons are "picked on" so much would be because Satan hates them for some reason.
From a psychological standpoint, I would have to guess that for a very long time Mormons were something you only heard about in rumor. And as such there would be a lot of deeply ingrained fears and superstitions about Mormons that people may have.
And Baal, no Mormons do not practice polygamy. At one point in time we did but that has not been practiced in over 100 years and even when it was practiced only a very few were ever asked to do so (I think less than 5%).

In Christian circles, the word "cult" anymore is really defined as
The Church down the street that I do not like, or believe in, that I want everyone else to fear and hate as much as I do.
To call any group a "cult" brings a knee-jerk reaction of "A CULT???!!! OMG!! We have to do something, before they start breeding!!" or something to that effect. People will listen to the lies and half truths about our beliefs, instead of letting us tell them what we really believe.
But, as the "Mormons are a cult" group would have you believe:
cultists=liars
Mormon=cult
therefore
Mormons=liars
or, IOW, we are either going to tell you what you want to hear rather than the truth, or most Mormons are just too stupid or brainwashed to know what they really believe.
But, as one LDS apologist put it, so succinctly
"I am the world's foremost authority on what I believe!"

There is no difference. It is the arrogance of one religion thinking it is different or better than another. You will get many reasons why the Christian religion is not a cult but I am sorry all religions fall under the said definition.
Christian only think they are not a cult because they are told they are not or would like to think they are not. This way of think is like a modern civilization thinking it is not a tribe with tribal traditions.

In religion and sociology, a cult is a term designating a cohesive group of people (sometimes a relatively small and recently founded religious movement, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be far outside the mainstream, sometimes reaching the point of a taboo.

The only difference between a cult and a religion is the number of followers.
Scientology is your classic mind control cult, but has enough losers in it now to be a "legitimate" religion (~11 million members)
Mormons are a religion too.(~8-9 million members)

You have defined a religion, not a cult.
here is a better definition:
Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following 5 characteristics:
1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma
4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds recruit people
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society

All religions are, by definition, cults. Perhaps they feel picked on because a majority of the morman public figures are Hippocrates, and that pisses people off.

No religions are different in essence. But Mormonism is particularly silly, as you will find out if you read the Book of Mormon and can actually stand it long enough to work your way through this considerable pile of turgid drivel.
