Hiya!
you'll be surprised what 500 quid can buy you these days, you can pick up M reg Renault Clios, Mk5 fiestas, for about that now.
I think the Adtrader which use to be called the freeadds is a really good paper, that comes out on wednesdays. Or have a browse through the cars on ebay, you can get some bargains on there too if your willing to travel. or your local paper,Cars under 500. Or if you go to any local car sales garages & ask them in there if they've got any part x cars coming in for sale?
I've brought some really good bargins doing that! the cars are fine it's just owners wanting a new car & there old one is fine! try that! you know who your buying off aswell then!
Good Luck & try & get a mechanic to go with you on viewing : )

I'd go with a corsa/astra or fiesta/escort, If you were nearer to Scotland I could of sorted you out with something half decent for that kind of money. Got a good condition pug 106 n reg for £400.
I dont think many garages will deal with you on their old trade stuff. Most have regular traders like myself who buy all their trade stuff unless its scrap, only stuff leftover is the junk. Also most wont deal with non trade as they dont want any comeback.

The first 4 in this list might be of interest to you at that pricerange. (I did a search with a Hertfordshire postcode)
http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=3&hassearched=Y&make=TOYOTA&min_pr=75&source=0&model=COROLLA&max_pr=2000&miles=40&agerange=&mileage=&postcode=HP1+1BB&variant=&bodyid=0&trim=&fuelid=0&colour=&transmissionid=0&keywords=&ukcarsearch_full.x=57&ukcarsearch_full.y=10&ukcarsearch_full=SEARCH
Toyota's are very very reliable and can do hundreds of thousands of miles providing they get serviced (oil and filters ect) at the recommended intervals. Its no surprise why you see mostly Toyotas in the most hostile and rough areas of the planet... cause they are well built, economical and reliable.

try a toyota or vw but you best to spend more than a monkey to get anything decent and avoid buying a car from near the seaside the salty air tends to eat into the metalwork aand make it rust away hope that helps

If you have a litle more to spend a Golf is a good choice, I have one and it always starts, good space in back and massive boot space, although parts bit more expensive that Ford or something but it def a good choice. Mine is only L reg but still going strong.

I'd go with Toby G* on this, often garages have part-exchanges coming in that they frankly don't want. Just make sure you take someone with you who knows about cars, preferably a mechanic.
