I'm not asking which is the best, but I've heard several people say paras are more mentally tough than marines, what do they mean by that? Do paras get special training to mentally prepare them for war? also are they as fit as a marine would be? I've also heard people say paras are more elite than marines, but marines are commandos so I don't know what they're talking about

I've wanted to join the marines for a while now, but I'm also looking at the paras, I don't know which would be best for me so some info would be appreciated here

thanks

In response to gungho marines' answer...

I fail to understand how riding in an armored vehicle and then getting dropped in an area that had just received intense naval bombardment is harder than being a Paratrooper.

Jumping out of an airplane in the middle of the night, with over 150 lbs of gear strapped to you, into the middle of a enemy occupied zone, being vulnerable to enemy AA while in the plane and the chute, hitting the ground like you jumped off a 20 foot building, then fighting your way to a rally point, all the while knowing you have no backup, resupply, or friendly forces in the area for assistance does not sound like being a "sissy."

I'm not bashing the Marines out there in the world, I have the utmost respect for all my brother-in-arms. I simply won't stand for some leg bashing my fellow Paratroopers.

My answer would apply to most Western Marine/Para forces.I would say that paras are more mentally tougher than the Royal Marines. But not by much.I say this only because of the size and types of missions each unit performs.
The Royal Marines, being considerably smaller than the US Marine Corps, operates more like light infantry. Not having the type of armored vehicles and air support the USMC has.The Royal Marine Commandos on the other hand could be compared to the US Marine Force Recon. Both being special operations units.
The Paras, operating behind the lines, must perform their mission without the support associated with marine forces. The support the paras have when they first hit the ground is what they have on their back.
The paras, being jump-qualified means that they are able to perform some special ops type missions.Though by no means all.
Also a marine, if meeting difficulty can fall back to better positions.A para can only go forward since there is no place to fall back to.A marine force usually meets the enemy face to face.A para comes from behind.

They are both elite.

I think it's fair to say they're about the same for mental attitude.

If you are a very good swimmer and think you might like amphibious operations, go for the Royal Marines.

If you can't swim very well and/or like the idea of parachuting deep behind enemy lines, go for the Paras.

Well, I think the tougher than Marines part comes from them thinking that they have to have a stronger constitution to jump from 30 thousand feet in the air carrying a whole BUNCH of stuff, including gun, water, grenades, AND parachute n' stuff.

from what i hear parachuting is not a big thing. homosexuals can do it, sissies can do it. but real courage comes to play when a marine leaves the ship in an amphibious tractor, hits the beach, and defeats the enemy in his own backyard. i was a united states marine, i have alot of respect for the royal marines. Marines are the best in every country

They are both tough. Paratroopers are a more elite group than regular infantry. They have more training, tougher training, are given more difficult assignments, but they pull together better than regular infantry. The marines also have their own elite forces that get more rigorous training so it is not possible to answer your question one or the other. My hat is off to all of them.
