about 4 months ago, i got my first 1bdrm apartment, and no matter what i do, i can never get my apartment to have my "touch". I dnt got much money, so expensive add-ons are out! im not allowed to paint the apartment, and i cant really alter it much, but how do i get a good energy vibe in my apartment? it just seems pretty boring in here, and im always home, so i want a more vibrant environment. I also want my apartment to kinda have an Indian touch to it to reflect my culture. i have Indian calendars everywhere, pictures of deities such as Ganesh,Krshna, Amba, etc...and i wrote words on the wall out of red powder(washes off, commonly used in prayers)...and i got a few Indian textiles up. There's not much furniture...just stuff passed down to me...and i just wanna know how I can give it my "touch" without being too costly. I cant buy furniture, or "fancy things"...how can i make my apartment my home?

When you rent, you want to be able to take your decorating with you. I have carefully stapled material up on walls to get color and texture. I have made my own pole planters-ceiling to floor-by windows to hang lots of plants(ask people for starts, never buy) or whatever struck me as right at the moment. There are lots of plug in nightlights that you can use to direct lighting for dramatic effects. I bought a cheapie floorlamp and put one of those stain glass bulbs in it and a thingie that turns it on at dark. It's great lighting to come home to. Check out all yardsales and get worn furniture and fix it up to your taste-so many ways to refinish cheaply. When I'm checking out at the supermarket I check out all the decorating magazines to see what I might to do achieve that effect. Move your furniture around and do different things. I watched Oprah one day and that decorating guy was on and he simply moved a bed across the corner of the room, used bigger tables for night stands so that you could actually have what you need close to you and then some things to make it look nice instead of functional. He put lots of plants behind the headboard at different heights. It was striking. And pillows. . .all sizes. . .cheapest way to add zip. Look at some very expensive ones. Go to yard sales and buy the feather pillows, go to material sales and make your own. Drape some of your material over your couch or chair or window covering. I'm not from where you are but just move it around and add color. . .

Hey There!
I was just browsing around on Yahoo Answers and came across this question of yours.
You can go to IKEA and get furniture covers (seat covers), rugs, pictures of friends & family. Add more colors with pillows or blankets, how about magazines or books or maybe just do some rearranging. It sounds like you may have plenty already, but maybe your space could use a little Feng-Shui.
I’m an IKEA Regional Manager and was informed of a private website at my last regional managers meeting that ended up to be a promotion we’re doing.
This website is giving away several hundred $1,000 IKEA Giftcards for just putting in your zipcode. It’s a marketing campaign they are doing to see what areas of the country people are interested in IKEA!
You can’t go wrong… Just put in your zipcode and get a $1,000 IKEA Giftcard.
You could do some SERIOUS DECORATING for the free $1,000 from this giveaway they are doing!
Heck, you could even get the FREE Giftcard and sell it on ebay and go buy stuff somewhere else with the money you just made!

Since you can't paint (I had the same issue when I rented a few years ago), something that is nice and not permanent is to go down and buy bright cloth on sale at a craft or material store. Get a very nice silky bright color. Tack it up on the celing in the corners and put small lights behind it. You can design it to have lower spaces, or just in the corners, or draping down the wall from the ceiling. It will soften your room and also, make it warmer and more cozy. It should not cost you very much for the cloth and the tacks and you can arrange it over and over until you get it just how you want it.

Try adding some plants to your decor. and make some feathered medicine rings with beads and rabbit furs. you can usually find a few Indian blankets at a thrift store. or make your own real cheap by getting some Indian style cloth at the nearest all around store and make some pillows to match.
but plants really add the touch to any home, or apt.
maybe get some rugs that are Indian style. hang a dream catcher in the window. get some incense and a sage stick or cedar to cleanse the apt. candles are always a nice touch.

Craigs List http://www.craigslist.com you can pretty much find anything you want Free or Cheap. Don't know where you are located, but this is mainly in the San Francisco Bay Area, they are branching out. Go to the For Sale section, then click on Free - amazing what you can get for free. Some people have furnished their whole apt. from here. Good Look and congratulations on your first 1 bdrm. apt.

live plants can add a lot to your space. if you cant paint the walls you could use scrap booking papers framed to add color, texture and personality to the walls.you mention hand me down furniture, if it doesn't match or coordinate you can paint it or use slipcovers to gain a more unified look. most important is to use things that make you happy. saris can be used for curtains and table clothes, you can also tack them up onto the ceiling for a tent effect, or use as a canopy over your bed. things dont have to be exact matches they just need to coordinate by color or theme. have fun and good luck.
