The Sanskrit word mantra is a combination of two syllables, man and tra. Man means "mind," and tra means "deliverance." Therefore a mantra is that which delivers you from mental concoction, from hovering on the mental plane.
So if you chant this mantra—

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

—very soon you'll find that you are coming from the darkness to the light.

This process of purifying the mind is also recommended by Lord Chaitanya; He says that one should chant Hare Krishna. He says further, param vijayate: "All glories to Sri Krishna sankirtana!" All glories are given to the chanting of the holy names of Krishna because as soon as one begins this process of chanting, the mind becomes purified. Ceto-darpana-marjanam: [Cc. Antya 20.12] by chanting the holy name of Krishna one is cleansed of the dirt that accumulates in the mind. One can purify the mind either by the breathing process or by the chanting process, just as one can purify gold by putting it in a fire and fanning it with a bellows.

They spend hours meditating. Many do yoga as well, which keeps the body healthy and releases physical stress so there aren't physical problems to get in the way of peaceful meditation.

They meditates and rid themselves from attachments as much as possible to make their minds pure. Lets say when you insulted them, they remain calm since they are not attach to their egos, you take something from them, it's fine as they are not attached to material things, you point a gun at them, they still remain calm since they are not attached to earthly life, but of course only a few masters can actually still remain calm and peaceful even in extreme situations.
