OK

Your big mistake is putting the plantains in there, they release a gas that causes other fruit & veg to ripen and go off quicker than normal.

The onions shouldn't be in the fridge at all, and will last for weeks simply in a dry place

The tomatoes should have been ok for at least a week, depending on how ripe they were to start with, but the plantains runined that.

It depends on a lot of things. But tomatos should only be refrigerated when they are on the verge of spoiling -- they get mealy at low temperatures. Keep them in a cool part of your kitchen, and use them before they get soft! You can also freeze them when they get old, then use them for things like tomato sauce.

Onions and potatoes also don't need refrigeration. A cool, dark place (under the sink works for me) is just fine. When spring comes, though, they start to sprout. There's not much you can do about it -- just Mother Nature at work. Try to use them up as soon as you can.

Potato sprouts are poisonous -- pull them off and throw them away (but the potato should be fine as long as it's not green).

Onion sprouts are perfectly edible. Just cut them up and use them like you would green onions.

I'm not sure about plaintains, but you should never put bananas in the refrigerator until they are ripe (they won't ripen well if they are kept under a certain temp).

I would say usually about 5 days, give or take a few. Sometimes it depends on the vegetable.

I also had the same problem...................That space is called a crisper......... haha, more like a rotter. But, i found out that if you take the veggies out of the bags and just set them in lose and dry it will last a week.....leafy greens get a little limp.
