Illinois, as many other geographical points, were named by the French using original Indian names, adapted to the French spelling,
So the "s" in Illinois is silent. and the original pronunciation was probably "ill lin nwah", but this last doesn't go with the character of the English language as "Illi noy" does

The S is silent, like the last S in Arkansas. And I'm not from Illinois and I've never heard it pronounced any other way other than Illi Noy

The name orgininated from France. And in the French language the last letter tends to be left out. such as, "faux" which means fake is pronounced "foe" because the x is silent and Illinois is pronouced "illinoy" because the s is silent.

I went to school in Illinois, I remember in elementary school they taught us "There is no "noise" in Illinois." It was kind of funny, because the local dialect pronounces it "Illi(noise)"

That is the correct pronunciation. the letter s is silent on that case. It can be called additional letter as decoration. It looks more beautiful to look at it than on a simple Illinoi
