Because way back in the day, it was normal for people to wear that stuff, and the Catholic church is big on tradition.
And it would be weird to see the His Holiness the Pope of Rome wearing jeans from the Gap.

You noticed eh. But you should understand that it is Elvis and Lee and others like Rufus Thomas and James Brown that are imitating an institution that goes back centuries. Remember the Pope is the Vicar of Christ on Earth for the Roman Catholic Church. And of course Jesus is the King of Kings. What would you expect him to wear, a thong?

The office of the Papacy was, in its day, the "King of" everything. Therefore, the crowns of all of Europe bowed down to those men. They even gave them gifts. It's all the idolitry and hipocracy embedded in that particular religion.

That is his right. to wear what he wanted to wear and if you also like to dress like him, do it. no one will forbid you. somebody will only laugh at you. Anyway you will not be punished for wearing the same as of the pope.
