Use crushed ice.. Remember in the old movies where the killer used an ice pick to kill the host .. not the kind you go climbing with, but small pointed instrument used to chip ice off a large chunk.. chips of ice are what fall away from the larger piece.

The patient has no option than to take it slowly. Also the amount of liquid would only be about a third if compared to water. This is usually only when a patient is waiting to be seen by a doctor, or is recently post operative. As you know you cannot be operated on or have any procedures that require a general anaesthetic unless you have fasted for a specified time.Except in absolute emergencies. The shaved ice is to ensure that the hospital staff know defiantly that, since the patient has been in A&E that they have been on fast. Almost all other drinks have sugar or some additives. Which like food, could lead to vomitting under anesthetic.

They are just small pieces of ice. They will cool down your tongue and numb it to stop it from hurting. And they'll be a way to get some liquids.

Pregnant women in labor also are supposed to suck on ice chips. Too much water may make them vomit, and also it's not good to have water or food if major surgery is required.
