My father married a woman from the Philipenes Oct 2005. She finally got to move to America and live here. On Satuday, all of my family is throwing her a party. I don't know what kind of party you would call it so I will call it a 'Welcome to America' party. Eveyone is getting gifts for her. I live 1,500 miles away and even though I cannot go, I would still like to send a gift. I am at a loss at what to get. My dad said to just send a gift card, but I would like some better gift ideas. I know she likes cross stitching and will have a lot of time on her hands until she can get a job here. I don't think buying her a cross stitching pattern would be good because I don't know If they are the same in the Philipenes as what we have her in our stores( as in the directions and the termanology and such) Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

i have been married to a Filipino for over twenty years.

any gift that you give make sure it is not from her homeland of the Philippines..trust me..
If she is Catholic faith a religious statue of the blessed mother and child would be a starter as most Filipino women are very superstitious...
A nice necklace..but not cheap metals...not a "Timex" watch..this too was made in the Philippines and is looked down on...Filipinos like brand names from US or Japan..they know quality of jewely or appliances...I do know if you would give an expensive or costly looking photo album book for them to keep their photos..when you go to the Philippine homes the first thing you see is their photo albums of their family pictures..its in every Philippine home i seen plus religious pictures and crosses if they are Catholic..gift cards are good...its easy..but the person won't remember your gift
...one think i noticed about Filipino culture..they all love to gamble...gamble gamble..mah jong? well, its an idea..they are addicted to the gambling and their native food of white rice and a lot of adoble-lumpia-anchovies-dried fish-and foods that would kill the average hog if he ate them..

I think your dad's idea is the best, you can add a small card or gift to suplement that. You are a step daughter.

Buy her couples of phone card, so she can call back home, incase she misses her parents or relatives. That's can avoid costing your dad lots of big buck for long distance phone call. Trust me she will needed that.
