not enough to loose weight if you are stuffing your face constantly. I know this is not scientific, but your body is always burning calories, but for optimal weight loss success you have to take in less calories than you expend daily.

I am going to make some assumptions here.
What I think you are asking is at a state of rest how many calories does the body use. This would mean no digestion is taking place.
This is defined by your Basil Metabolic Rate. This would mean no digestion is taking place. And you are in an environment that is temperature neutral.
Let's say that for the sake of argument you haven't eaten in 12 hours and that you are neither hot enough to start perspiring or cool enough to need to expend energy to maintain a proper temperature.
All that is going on in your body is your Vital Organ are functioning which does expend calories.
Factors affecting your BMR are age (you BMR lowers with ages), Lean muscle mass, you normal level of exercising if any (more exercise actually increase you base BMR), plus a few other things including your stress level.
BMR requires you to be awake.
It's easier to use RMR or resting metabolic rate because it is a less restrictive measurement.
I would suggest you go the the link below for more information. It goes into detail of what BMR is and has some formulas for determining it since it is different for you than it it would be for someone else.
