I have two cats that used to be total buddy's, like best friends, almost inseparable. One is 4 years old and the other is 10 months old and both are female. I just had the 10 month old fixed (spayed), and while she was gone my other cat was going crazy looking for her pal everywhere. But then when I brought home my little one after surgery my other cat started hissing and growling horrably at her and almost attacked her. The poor little one went through a tramatic experiance and came home to her bestfriend freaking out on her. Is it normal for cats to start hissing and growling at each other after one of them gets fixed? Do they ever get over this?? If so, how long does it take for them to get over it? The little one feels so yucky and seems so sad & scared of the other one now, what can I do??

It's pretty normal. Cats operate on their sense of smell and the kitty that got spayed came home smelling like a bunch of other animals. Give them a few days and things should get back to normal. In the meantime, keep them in separate rooms.

I believe it is normal I just had a mother cat spayed and when I brought her home she hissed and spit at her baby. and she wouldn't let her near her, but after about a month or so everything went back to normal actually the mother cat is more playful since the spaying.

Your older girl began hissing at the younger one that got spayed becasue after returning from the vet's the young one smelt althogether like a different cat! Help the re-intro along by wiping the older one with a towel and then wiping that towel on the young one - exchange their scents.

This is pretty common, your kitty that just got home from the hospital smells different to your other cat. Give it a day or so and your cat will pick up that familiar "home" scent, and the other cat will not be offended.

Maybe you should have the older cat fixed too? Then they would become friends again??
