I love Pippin.

Pippin is the son of Charlemagne. The Leading Player (who is sometimes interpreted as the Devil, but not always) plays on the naivete of Pippin. He leads the only slightly unwilling Pippin to do things that will make him great. You saw the show so I'm not going to bore you with the details, but the Player basically leads him through the different ways he could make his life great, but none of them are GOOD. (Murder, sex, etc.)

Pippin then stumbles upon the farm of Catherine and her son Theo. They put him to work in return for their hospitality. Pippin gets angry and upset, thinking he is above the work he is being forced to do. He even ignores the fact that he is falling in love with the woman and child. So, he runs.

The last stab that the Leading Player and his crew make is to try to have Pippin kill himself in a way that will make him be remembered--fire. However, he refuses and ends up with Catherine and Theo after all.

The overall idea, which I hope my annoying plot summary will support, is that the simple life of work and love is a good one. One should not selfishly strive for greatness, but should be content with family and self.
