Before her stroke she did not have that problem. I have asked my mom the reason for the light but she does not have an answer except that she wants a light on. I also have an aunt who had a stroke and sleeps with a light on.

Strokes can cause a lot of personality changes. It's most likely a new 'quirk'.

Sometimes when the body has a stroke the person sees nothing but black and this could be the reason for the light. My mother also would only sleep during the day and stay up all night after her stroke. That way when she opened her eyes she saw the sun coming from the windows. It is a safty for them. Sorry about your mother.

A stroke affects the "electrical wiring" in the body and once someone has had a stroke the possibility of 100% recovery is slim. Your mother doesn't know why she must have the light on now anymore than her doctor or any one else does. If this is the worst of her symptoms thank your blessings and just be supportive.

It's just a fear and really not a big deal. I can't sleep in the dark and use small lights and I am only 29. It could have something to do with how alone and scared you feel when you have had a stroke but either way, it's not a big deal.

Perhaps this is just a sort of basic response to fear; we fear more in the dark than in the light, as a rule, so it may simply be your mother's way of coping with what happened to her. Certainly, it's a small-enough thing to do for her; I wouldn't see any reason to deny her this small comfort.

It is comforting to them.Do not forget they were plunged into darkness before they came to.Now they want to make sure someone finds them before it is too late.

I'm sure it has something to do w/ her brain being affected. She can't give you a reason the same way most of us can't either.
