It has to do with the constellation of Virgo, which "gives birth" to the sun in the fall. Get a good star map, look up September, 96 AD, and read Revelation Chapter 12.

Virginity here is not about a woman's physical state but about purity. Nowhere does any scripture says you get rotten fruits or left-over anything in heaven. Everything that is mentioned IS fresh, pure & virgin in heaven. If you read all the verses in the holy books (atleast the quran), you get something pure in heaven only if you lead a pure, chaste life in this world. If Islam were a bad religion, as many here are lead to believe, why does it enjoin upon its followers to lead a chaste life, pray five times a day, stay clear of alcohol, shun illicit sex, avoid usury, maintain purity of thought, help the poor, the sick & the needy through the compulsary poor tax known as Zakath etc. It would have given Muslims the license to do everything which is the opposite of the above & then the best man (or men) would have got 72 virgins (each) as the first prize !! Just think!!

Well, this will probably sound alien to you, but some people like to remain "virgins" until they're married. It makes everything more intimate and significant. If you can just sleep around with someone any time, what's the point of getting married? There's a lot more to marriage than just sex, but that's kind of a foundational part.
In Biblical times, virgins were symbols of purity and something clean--not to be touched. It was kind of an honor to be a virgin. Not all guys had to manifest their sexual desires by the age of 15!

Virginity in mythology is a symbol of purity--lots of demigods/heros were born of virgins.

As for why religious people put such a high price on virginity? It is my opinion that this tradition is firmly based in the concept that women are to be exchanged as property (ever wonder why a woman was "given away" at her wedding?). Nobody wants to buy property that somebody else has had fun with already.

Because it's linked with purity and being "untainted". It's a patriarchal kind of thing. I think it comes from the Biblical reference to Eve eating the fruit and becoming part of it, essentially. That's why a woman's hymen is referred to as a "cherry". Once the hymen is punctured, the woman is no longer "pure" (she has been tainted by another man).

To be honest with you, it's almost a primate-type belief. Humans used to travel in family groups like Gorillas and Chimpanzees. That's why, even today, a man having multiple partners can be a good thing. However, if a woman has more than one partner, it's like her loyalty to the family group is in question.

That's what I think, anyway. Personal opinion, nothing more.

Well, I'm 20 and still a virgin. I just think it's the way it's supposed to be. I would like to remain pure and wear my white dress when I get married knowing I remained a virgin.

It's actually about when women used to be their father's property. Some religions codified cultural values and customs as religious "law".

You know how everyone wants something brand new instead of used.

I like virgins, but not religion. I also like to mix the two in the form of Preacher's Daughters!

It has two functions, no one wants used property, and keeps the boys willing to work in order to win/buy the girls. It is a societal control.
