Meditation is the psychological approach to mental culture, training and purification.
There are various websites on meditation that you can search on these days however you must ask yourself what do you really want out of your meditation practice? How much time do you intend to spend on each day for the benefit of your practice and what goal you wish to achieve throughout your span of practice?

before you run off and find an Indian guru, consider that meditation is practiced by all kinds of people everywhere, both religious and non-religious. You don't have to practice yoga or eastern religions, they have their forms but there are types of meditation everywhere.
I like the answer that suggest relaxation. The common element I think is calming the body, mind and spirit, and focusing on the awareness you have of being alive in the here and now. Native American vision quests involve this meditative state. Even some kinds of christian prayer are meditation.
Beware anyone who says they have "the" way to meditate. The best form for you depends on your world view and is for you to decide. There's lots to choose from.
You can make up your own, too. I've experienced too many world views to adopt any traditional practices. Currently I use a blend of Buddhist-style breath observation, mixed with Native-American style nature-consciousness, and a few other things. Sometimes in the easy half-lotus, sometimes with no specific posture. It works.
ps. beware of cultist scammers! they're really out there.

Meditation describes a state of concentrated attention on some object of thought or awareness. It usually involves turning the attention inward to the mind itself. Meditation is often recognized as a component of Eastern religions, where it has been practiced for over 5,000 years. It has also become mainstream in Western culture. It encompasses any of a wide variety of spiritual practices which emphasize mental activity or quiescence. Meditation can be used for personal development, or to focus the mind on God (or an aspect of God). Many practice meditation in order to achieve peace, while others practice certain physical yogas in order to become healthier.

Meditation... Towards a Stress Free Life
Meditation: What it is !!!
An ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation.
Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means 'to join together or to yoke' . It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one.
A Tibetan Lama was being monitored on a brain scan machine by a scientist wishing to test physiological functions during deep meditation. The scientist said - "Very good Sir. The machine shows that you are able to go very deep in brain relaxation, and that validates your meditation". "No", said the Lama, "This (pointing to his brain) validates the machine!".
These days it is commonly understood to mean some form of spiritual practice where one sits down with eyes closed and empties the mind to attain inner peace, relaxation or even an experience of God. Some people use the term as "my gardening is my meditation" or for jogging or art or music, hence creating confusion or misunderstanding.
The word meditation, is derived from two Latin words : meditari(to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation 'medha' means wisdom.
Many years ago meditation was considered something just not meant for modern people, but now it has become very popular with all types of people. Published scientific and medical evidence has proved its benefits, but it still needs to be much understood.
Traditionally, the classical yoga texts, describe that to attain true states of meditation one must go through several stages. After the necessary preparation of personal and social code, physical position, breath control, and relaxation come the more advanced stages of concentration, contemplation, and then ultimately absorption. But that does not mean that one must perfect any one stage before moving onto the next. The Integral yoga approach is simultaneous application of a little of all stages together.
Commonly today, people can mean any one of these stages when they refer to the term meditation. Some schools only teach concentration techniques, some relaxation, and others teach free form contemplative activities like just sitting and awaiting absorption. Some call it meditation without giving credence to yoga for fear of being branded 'eastern'. But yoga is not something eastern or western as it is universal in its approach and application.
With regular practice of a balanced series of techniques, the energy of the body and mind can be liberated and the quality of consciousness can be expanded. This is not a subjective claim but is now being investigated by the scientists and being shown by an empirical fact.

It is a method of finding your centre of consciousness, where you are free from the cares and worries of everyday life. Practice the following meditation technique for at least 20 minutes, daily (preferably 3 times a day, morning, afternoon and evening): also in times of adverse life events. Sit comfortably in a darkened room, gazing at a lighted candle. Focus all your attention on the feeling your breath makes at the point where it enters and leaves your body, as you breathe regularly, preferably through the nose, in and out, in and out, in and out................All thoughts noted and dismissed as mere distractions, as you return to the process. There are many types, but this is an easy one for beginners. Remember to pass this technique on to others, both here and elsewhere, once you have learned to appreciate its value, which may take as long as several weeks, but usually considerably sooner.
