To be careful is not always possible. You are standing in bus-stand a old man begs you, you gave him something and you may not know how he is going to use it. You cant say i dont know your bonafidity and i cant help you.
In Hinduism there is a mantra to give anything, which ends with ITTANAMMA., means that this is not mine. As soon as you give something, you are loosing the possession of that and your part is over. No need to worry about that. More than that the rules are very strict for the giver.
1) Give with FAITH.
2)Don't give WITHOUT FAITH
3)Give the BEST
4)Give with WHOLE-HEART
5)Give with moral FEAR. (Unless you give now you may loose the chance in the future.)
6)Give SUFFICIENTLY.

I believe it's not a good idea to make donations through materialistic media such as money. If one really wants to contribute, he must donate some time... Time to educate the uneducated, time to go and feed the starving, time to go to an orphanage every once a while to make the kids out there realize that somebody cares, time to contribute in cleanliness of the society, time to oppose the wrongdoings.
What kindness is that if a person donates money to educate people, but when he himself gets an opportunity to educate one, he would say to himself, "Who has time? Besides these guys are so filthy, can't even go near them..."
Do not donate the media, donate part of yourself.
All the best...

You are very correct.
In my case, I like to donate it directly to the person in need eg -an old person without support.
-a cancer/ very sick patient in need of medicines/therapies.
-a poor student to pay his fees directly to the school/college.
-some organisation which actually give the break up in supporting specific schemes like, orphanages, old peoples homes, home for destitutes, camps for cataract surgery etc, etc, etc.
Even Rajiv Gandhi had made a statement that in India only 10% of the aid-money reaches the target-audience--so you can guess who are the intermediaries.
Why even the money that we pay as tax is a type of donation. don't you think?
Not better than 'Zaziya' for you can be penalised for not paying it?
And who controls it's Spending?
Your very own Legislators and how do they use or misuse it?
During the last elections to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, most of the sitting MLAs had 'officially' declared assets over 1 crore each, when only a few years back before their elections they had not much to boast about. How much assets have you yourself accumulated during the same period?
That is why Politics has become the most lucrative profession even leaving the IIMs, IITs etc, etc........far behind in earnings for that is where the 90% of the aid starts trickling down before the 10% reaches the intended target and mind you that too TAX-FREE.

I choose not to donate to any organization unless I have substantial knowledge of and feel very comfortable with that organization. For example I refuse to donate to such organizations as the United Way, or the Red Cross, for a number of reasons. I choose to donate to my local church or such organizations that have a history of helping people or promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Like Billy Graham Evangelistic Assn., Kenneth Copeland Ministries, Ever Increasing Word Ministries, Jerry Savelle Ministries, Jesse Duplantis Ministries, World Changers Ministries etc.

In donating, one feels the need to help others. What those that receive the donation does with it... is no longer the responsibility of the giver. For example: when one donates monies to a church, in good faith, they believe those receiving it will do good with the money. But, if those receiving it does something corrupt with that donation, its on their hands not the hands of those who gave.

I choose my donations wisely when donating to an organization. I give to individuals freely though. When donating to organizations, I donate goods instead of money when possible and only donate money to the March of Dimes (my first born was a preemie) and to research.

Our deeds are judged on based on intention, if you gave some money to a homeless person, so that he made feed himself. You will be rewarded for just that
even if he took that money, and bought another hit of whatever drug. He will be punished for his intentions.
I always believe its better to give to people in third world countries because they didn't have the same opportunities are mr. hobo, who lives in downtown.

YES! I am standing up to this abuse in my country.
The peoples of the World give more than enough to help.
But just like those who have money to burn, they
waste it. Not keeping up with expenditures,
(simple accounting). Buying perks, (presents for people in charge).
Not to mention embezzeling. (Skimming money).
And outright theft of goods, (food, and medicinal
supplies).
We need to make sure our charity is not being abused.
