A person who performs ultrasounds would be radiology technician or radiologist or a sonographer. There is probably a school around you that has a prgram like that. I'm not exactly sure where you are, but if you are in the US, look at Pima Medical Institute and Bryman College, I'm pretty sure they have several locations. I went to Pima Med. Institute in Seattle, WA to become a Medical Assistant and it took me 9 months. I believe Rad. Tech. is at least a year, if not 2. Good luck!

If you are interested in Ultrasonography, you should find a school in your area. The best resource for finding those kinds of programs would be your local hospital's imaging department. You could give them a call and ask to speak to an ultrasound technologist. There are a couple different ways to become a "sonographer," and depending on your state or country's requirements, these would vary. Some states require that a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer receive a degree in Radiologic Technology, or X-Ray, since these kinds of medical imaging both involve the use of ionizing radiation. However, since there are no Federal Minium Standards for the use of ionizing radiation in the US, some states may allow you to become independently registered in ultrasound alone. You would take the 18 month to 24 month courses and then "sit for the boards," which is when you would take your registry test to become Nationally registered as a sonographer. Performing ultrasounds is no picnic though, which is why the pay is great. In our busy imaging department, there is of course a shortage, and there are lots of call hours for our Sonographers, as well as dealing with very sick patients. My advice to you is go to your local hospital or an outpatient imaging clinic and ask them if you might observe for a day or maybe even a week before you make a decision to go into the field. Remember, all medical professionals should have an intense desire to help people, possess the ability to keep a positive attitude during stressful situations, and be very patient. You would do lots of clinic hours during any training program, so you would have lots of time to make up your mind, but Ultrasound school is probably pretty expensive. Good luck, and it's great that you have an interest in this exciting field.

The name of the course is "radiography". It enables you to use ultrasound machines, X Ray machines, and really cool stuff like NMR machines. A google on Radiography courses should bring up your options - I can tell you where to study in Australia, but thats probably not much help!

You can also discuss with your school careers advisor. :)
