My german shepherd plays really rough with her puppies. They are 9 weeks old. She bites at their necks and legs. Is this normal? Should we let her do this? The puppies scream their heads off when she does this.

Mother knows best. It is perfectly normal, and actually a good learning experience for the puppies.

She is probably not hurting them and my best guess is that the puppies are still attempting to nurse and she wants no part of it. At nine weeks, if you feel the puppies teeth you probably can guess why. Since the mother dog as taken care of them up to this point you can pretty well bet she knows what she is doing.

This is completely normal. She is just teaching them skills. If you watch carefully you will see the puppies doing the same to her..maybe not at that moment but later on when mom isn't watching, even perhaps "stalking" mom.

It is normal for dogs to discipline her pups.Anyway she doesn'y really bite them... just a nip . If she is still nursing her pups maybe she finds it painful . Puppies are known to have sharp litlle teeth and maybe hurting the mother when sucking milk. Could it be it is time to wean them ? Ask your vet about it.

Yeah, it's pretty normal. As long as she isn't actually hurting them. Let her do it. She is teaching them their place in the pack (under her). My chihuahua mom gets that way with hers as they get older like yours are now. Keep an eye on things and if you feel she's gone to far, stop her and redirect the play.

the pups are hers right? if they are..then its okay. Mommy dogs just play with her pups that way. Our pups use to put their heads in their mom's mouth...and their mom would really just close her mouth = =...but they are fine. Biting the neck or leg or head is normal..I know it sounds wierd.
