atkins is a balanced fat diet. It is based on trying to wean you from the hunger you get from carb addiction. You need to get all the books from the library and follow the recommendations.
If you are too lazy to read the books and follow the rules, no diet will work. Bu the way. If you do atkins or any diet. When it is over , you will be tempted to do as you did before. It is a lifetime commitment to be fit and attractive. Do this for me, thanks.

Here is the truth about the Atkins diet. Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the brain and the central nervous system. In addition, it is the only source of fuel for the kidneys and the erythrocytes (red blood cells). An average person needs about 130 to 150 grams/day to function normally. In a shortage, the liver will break down protein to make carbs (gluconeogenesis) and ketones (ketogenesis) to fulfill requirements. Whenever the body breaks down protein for energy, it creates a lot of ammonia in the system which is toxic, so the liver will turn it into uric acid (which can cause gout) before the kidneys flush it out. Since the kidneys need carbs to function, they are working overtime while short on fuel. The risks of this diet include overworked kidneys, gout, and hypoglycemia among many others. I have personally had to give first aid on 5 separate occasions to people who became hypoglycemic because they tried to workout while they were on the Atkins diet. Also, any diet which eliminates a vital nutrient can never qualify as a balanced diet. I hope this helps.

The Atkins diet is high in protein and low in carbs. Normally a person is supposed to get 20-25% of their kcallories from protein. A high protein diet can go upwards of 33% of your kcallories from protein sources. The best sources for protein are from nuts and animals, soy proteins can actually work against your body if it is not processed right.

If you are going to go with a high protein diet, make sure you are getting enough calcium and Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium and calcium helps process protein. It's best to get clacium and D from fortified orange juice as opposed to milk, because processed milk has its own problems with modified fats and hormones.

All in all make sure you are getting a good supply of vitamins and minerals if you are going the high protein route.

Dr Atkins died at a relatively young age ....I strongly advise you not use his diet i did and it failed then i went to the high fiber diet and lost one hundred pounds . the fat stimulates the prostaglandin activity which in turn is bad for clotting and causes stroke aneurism and the like . the heart assoc. says 30% fat in ones diet is recommended but then they claim that this is not really good enough . I have it on many dr.s word that as close to zero fat intake is preferred.this will along with fresh veggetables mod fruit whole grains as opposed to refined grains for carbs a gallon of water at least a day and avoidance of meat fish chicken and dairy products will reduce the risk of arterial heart and stroke problems by 68%.
