I know you can with Windows XP if you are running the correct services under Control Panel, Administrative Services, and make sure that all your "Remote..." Services are set to "Run" and are started, as long as your family members' computers are also set with the same options too. From their e-mail address (an e-mail addres based on their domain or ISP), you should be able to determine their IP addresses and go into your "Start" menu, "All Programs", "Accessories", "Communications" and chose "Remote Desktop Connection" and type in either their computer's name or IP address and log in to their computer. You should let them know that you want to try this or they or their firewall may mistake you for a hacker.
