i agree with jblair2007. the answer is to take a close look. the wood is split longitudinally and stuck.

First the wooden stick made into two halfs and then they made a slot in that. Then lead rod will be placed in the slot of the bottom half stick and second half stick will be placed on the top of the botton stick and both will be sticked with glue and will be painted after sticking well.

A Machine does the work. If you notice, the wood is split on both sides. The lead is placed and the Two wooden handles are joined(glued some how)
