I won a bet with my wife and now I can go above my usual wine budget for this month! I'm looking for an age-worthy red from the 2003 vintage, price range $60 Canadian. Any suggestions?

I'd look for a nice Oregon Pinot. 2003 was a pretty good year for several wineries, including Archery Summit and Domaine Drouhin. Both have wines in that price range.

This year was particuarly good (90+ out of 100) for the following:

California Northern Coast Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. Cab Sauv from that year is really hit or miss

St Juilen and different Sauterns were pretty good this year. These will have aging potential.

But, the best for regions was Cote Rotie/Hermitage from the Northern Rhone area. These are supposed to age fabulously and have the highest ranking of 96 for that year.

If you can branch out to 2004 or 05, then I'd go Oregon Pinot all the way. The winemakers are saying that if you couldn't produce a good wine in those years, that you shouldn't be making wine. The higher end wines will all be cellarable for 10+ years.

Joseph Drouhin 2003 Gevrey Chambertain...
Decadence in a glass. Even the color of this wine proclaims a sense of weight. Lovely garnet hues with plenty of extraction as it slides slowly down the sides of the glass. A big and expressive nose full of bright black cherries, cola and forest floor. Then dessert begins with a mouthful of chocolate-covered cherry, expansive grape tannins, and nuances of French oak and cocoa. Just the slightest hint of roasted mushroom, but mostly this wine falls under the "fruit-driven" vs. the "earth-bound" category. Could use some time in bottle to work on its finesse, but still a very nice wine now.
CHEERS!!!

How about an 1800 Chateou Lafite Rothshild for US$57,345.82. Or a bottle of a 1787 Bordeaux - specifically a Chateau Lafite for US$160,000..;.......
I wouldn't drink it though..... (It's an investment) Unless you're a Nouveau Riche idiot who gives it to their servants in order to impress the girls you just picked up at a local bar.......
As for a 2003 vintage...... you can obtain that at any 7/11..... - just kidding... as for a 2003 I like the Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vents Clos de la Roche.
