Most are in the hands of either the Israeli Antiquities Authority and the Vatican. (The majority with the IAA.)

A few of the pieces are loaned out to universities around the world, and to museums.

They were originally found close to the dead sea, in an area with a whole lot of caves. It's kind of funny really. The guy who found them threw a rock into a cave. He heard the shattering of some pottery, and he went to look. When he did, he found scroll pieces.

Since then, several other caves in the area have been found.

Most people say that they are new testament scrolls. This is incorrect. These scrolls were from before Jesus's death, and most from 200 years before his birth. They are mostly old testament, with some other writings scattered throughout.

The jews took them and hid them, no one was allowed to see their contexts, which lead to a world-wide scandal and international meetings, and still no one was allowed to see their contents.
