Human being with low self esteem always try to pretend what we are not. That is why Indians adopt western names.
They adopt because in that way their ego gets satisfaction.
Western people do not have inferiority complex so they do not use East Indian name nor the Islamic people.

I have seen Indians speak English & feel proud among themselves. I have never seen 2 french or 3 spanish or 2 Purtagees will speak in any second language. They wil use their own language. Because they have proud on their own language their cultue & country but we Indians do not have.

We feel pride in showing I "am westernise"
Sorry I am not included in That I am proud to be Indian, & Hindi speaking. For sure I have proud that I can spaek Bangla, Punjabee, Urdu & French equally.

I openly say English is the educated peoples language. It is our second language not first.

Not only that they try to act as they & their ancestors were born in western culture.

One of the following might apply:

1. In real life, many Westerners are not able to pronounce Indian names correctly so Indians have changed their names to another easy to pronounce name in real life and they continue to use the same online.

2. To avoid unnecessary questioning about the meaning of name. As you might know, some Indian names are actually not so nice words in English language. e.g. Anal (means fire in Sanskrit), Hardik (means from the heart in Hindi) but as you can see, Westerners would make fun of people with these names. So the person might change their name.

3. To disguise themselves with a common Western name (to hide their actual identity).

4. Western names fastinate them in some way, they think it's cool.

5. May be they don't like their typical long Indian name (I've seen some people actually disliking their first name, which is in fact the sweetest sound to a person's ears!)

I see you have really been observant...I guess that's because Indians have this mental block that whites (westerners) are really cool and that by copying their every move will make them cool too. Maybe that's because their nations are forward as a whole. But that doesn't mean that each person is good. ( seen jade goody?)
What we indians should realize is that ours is a really rich heritage and by using our indian names and nick-names, we will help in bringing our country to the world's notice.

But I've been diplomatic...no nick name for meeeee :)

If you're asking about internet names its so people can recognize it and say it. Its a courtesy. If I were in India and people had a hard time with my name, i would change it for them. I'm polite.

For example, a friend of mine has the Indian surname Vraidynathan, difficult for us anglophones to pronounce. Likewise another friend of mine with first name pronounces Palmy will give people the option to call him Pat since many people here find his name too weird.

India is a developing country. Here people want to be cool in others eyes. So, they adopt/select western nicknames to become(as they think they will by doing so) TRENDY.

some of Indian / hindi people think that western people are the best people, coz they have talent, money and lavish lifestyle, it is a mentality to join in their group by selecting western id so that western people accept them easily. Its just a mentality, Indian talent is as equal to any country in the world.

Well, I have a hybrid indicating citizen of earth. Imagine, Beatles "Nothing to live or die for" no artificial boundaries. How about Tagore ... "Where the mind is without fear ..." There is no East or West just humans and humanity.
