This is a personal observation that societies are becoming increasingly aggressive, hostile and bullish. Does anyone agree?

If you compare Chimp and Human behaviour, chimps are about 1000 times more agressive with one another than we are towards each other. Basically chimps are constantly kicking the crap out of each other, nicking each others bananas etc.

In comparison we don't. In fact we seems behave in a collective way to decision making - a collection of the meek; and it has been postulated that in times gone by collective action by the weak resulted in the murder of the 'bullies' weeding out their genetics from the gene pool, thus resulting in a less violent society.

However, (and this is my own take on things) modern society frowns on murder, it's illegal and so if someone really ***** you over, you no longer have recourse to a violent solution arrived at with the help of your friends and a body bag (not unless you're OK with doing a 20yr stretch with Ben Dover and his palls in the klink). Our society, driven by commercial competition, favours the agressive and the ruthless, these are the qualities that are favoured in corporate environments and as a result they are now proposing testing CEOs and senior exec's for psychopothy (aka is this guy/gal a psychopath? - seriously). So we are now both promoting and encouraging this behaviour (and these genes) and at the same time we have outlawed the mechanisms to remove these traits from our society (gene pool). So the bullies are breeding back in.

So in conclusion, YES we are getting more violent, because as you can see above there are clear mechanisms for the promotion of this behaviour and these traits in the gene pool. Given enough time we should become differentiated completely in a wealthy agressive 'boss' class and a meak, compliant and poor 'under' class. Maybe we're not that from it at the moment.

Haven't you ever answered a personal question on yahoo answers like my wife is divorcing me and you tell him what his problem is? Then he edit's in something nasty about you and you think if I had known he was this aggressive, hostile, and bullish I would have told him that is why she left you instead of telling him after twenty years of him not listening to her she deserves her freedom. Yes definitely in all walks of life.

I think so, I think it has to do with the stress everyone is under after 9/11 not to mention all the other changes that have taken effect in the past decade, It's like learning the rules and then have them changed at half time. It takes some adjustments, and that creats frustration, which creats aggravation. That's just my opinion.

I guess those times when every body had time for each other, must have slipped me by. When was that exactly? Was that when the Romans were busy having time for their neighbours? Was it when Knights were getting busy lopping off the heads of the unchivalrous and the heathens from the east, both of whom they seemed to have loads of time for? or was it during the Napoleonic wars, when the French Emperor needed to spend time with his Russian cousins? Or during the Inquisition, when all sorts of psychopaths spent their valuable time in meet 'n' greets with heretics and blasphemers? You get my point, there has never been a time when we had time for each other. The reason we're so on edge these days? Six billion too many of us on the planet. Time to cull the herd.

so my slant on it is that peace attracts aggresion just like opposites attract i dont venture out at night any more as here in the uk most town and city centres are full of drunks and we all know alcohol makes you aggressive and yet it is a paradox because for the past 15 years smacking kids has been outlawed as they say it makes them (as adults) be aggressive well in my opinion it has had the opposite affect then there are the violent video games in the equasion kids are allowed unlimited access to them

Hello AcuteEye

Yes I totally agree we are becoming increasingly aggressive.

I think the problem is people are finding it hard to make ends meet.

Rent or mortgages are too high
Food is expensive
Child care cost a fortune
Travel (tax, insurance and Petrol)
etc. etc etc.

I would love to go back to the days when people had time for each other. :-)

Yes I think the reason is that people are more competitive these days , we where always brought up to care for others and the environment ,
but it appears that peoples greed took over.
years ago we had nothing to fight or fall out about
