how do i get my 3 year old to stop sucking on her hair?

this is a recent habit but i dont know how to stop it.

i would somehow pull it back in tight bands. i teach preschool and have some girls who always have their hair in their face. their mothers insist that they can't keep it up for whatever reason. i bought the tiny rubber bands and pull their hair back each day. they are cheap so you just snip the rubber band at night to get it out.

stop it now so it won't become to hard to break. you don't want to have to cut it!

My daughter started doing this disgusting habit at about the same age.I quickly solved the problem by spraying "Rastachili" chilli oil on her hair.Make sure she doesn't get it in her eyes though,I was a bit slap dash and boy did she ever make a fuss.

One of my cousins did this, her mother kept pinning her hair back and she started to suck on a blanket. (Gross I know). I think you just have to keep telling her no and pull the hair out. I worked with a 4 year old who was mentally about 9 months. She sucked on her whole hand, I just kept pulling her hand out and holding it until it dried and would say no. I'd also try to distract her. It worked better than anything else other people tried.

If she hasn't stopped by you simply asking, perhaps you may tell her that you will cut it, that may prevent her from doing it because she doesn't want you to cut it. If it doesn't stop then, proceed to cut it off. Depending on the length of hair perhaps braids may work, but she may be able to suck on the braid. I think your best bet is to go ahead and cut it. Tell her it's icky every time she does it if you're consistent she will stop. or put in in a ponytail or chop it off
