I hate it. Have they started the smoking ban in the UK too? I was there in November and was allowed to smoke in the pub. As for Cyprus, smoking is still allowed in pubs etc. But I'm afraid that will come to an end soon. Why can't they have a well ventilated smokers corner? I'm 57 and been smoking since 18. I love to have a cig or two while I drink. I respect non-smokers but they don't respect or understand us.
Another thing is this: Why aren't the governments banning the production and sales of cigarettes if they sincerely believe they are harmful? It's easy, no cigarettes, no smoking problem. It is just plain hypocrisy to allow sales of cigarettes but to ban smoking. They do not dare do that of course, fearing they will lose all the tax money they make out of tobaccos sales, and they fear the fury of large international tobacco companies.

As a smoker mega unhappy. beer and fags go hand in hand.
I can understand the implications behind the ban and know it will be better for the staff especially the ones that dont smoke. but think about this......
If more people pack up cigarettes which is what the ban will do the money paid out in taxes for the cigarettes will have to come from somewhere an increase on income tax perhaps??!
Also in the republic of Ireland it has caused pubs to close and staff to be laid off due to their ban, and an increase of house fires because people are purchaseing beers and going home to drink kicking their shoes off, relaxing and falling asleep with their cigarettes still burning.
Your right about the government starting the ban in July for a reason people sit outside in beer gardens and pubs wont really feel the pinch in their sales untill the winter, but what will happen at clubs? If you go outside for a smoke will you have to pay to get back in? its happened in Ireland and caused major arguments and fights between the smokers and the door staff.
I think they should make each pub either smoking or non smoking then its choice wether or not you drink there.
A friend of mine in Ireland owed his pub he and his wife both smoked and all thier staff smoked so he let all the customers who wanted to smoke smoke.
They got caught and him and his wife got fined 30,000 euros each so they had to sell their pub and buisness to pay the fines they were left bankrupt and homeless, it just seemed very unfair as the ban was introduced to protect the workers health yet everyone smoked so who was it protecting.
The biggest con of all is the only place exempt from the ban is the "House of commons bar"

well in July its warm and OK right? i mean the band is usually outside anyway or DJ.. so.. no biggie but in colder weather I don't see why they cant have an air conditioned room for smokers a nice large room not for those who don't this way profits aren't affected to bar owners as they are now .. i think when ur ruled by no smoking in a pub i know the reason i understand but they should compromise for both needs..$ is to be made and how dare uncle sam etc say what u can and cannot do in ur own business.. if there was an alternative of a private smoking room fro those then people wouldn't be so bugged and money wouldn't be lost..

I am in Scotland. You can't smoke in your car if you are working. Lorry Drivers have to put their cigarettes out as soon as they reach the Border and a Taxi Driver was fined for smoking in his empty cab at the Taxi Rank. In the Pub we are all sitting and then one, two, or three will stop talking and go outside on to the street for a smoke. It is pouring with rain and very windy but still they try. It is so strange. I have never smoked but it did not bother me as I was with friends. Now I am often left with just one or two(they take turns) so I am not left entirely alone!! The other place it looks funny is outside Shops for instance the Bookmakers and hairdressers where customers nip out while they are betting on races or having their hair done. It affects areas you don't realise, not just pubs!

I'm glad they;re bringing in No Smoking in pubs and clubs. I'm only really a social smoker though, and I think that if I had to go outside every time I wanted a cigarette, I just wouldn't bother. Don;t know how I'd feel if I was a 20 a day smoker though but i suppose if they had a covered beer garden area with patio heaters it wouldn't be too bad.

Its just becoming a Dictator State. England is not free anymore. Let alone the British Isles.
The smoking laws are just pathetic.
If the Government have their way, and we all have to give up smoking ( which is what they really want), then what about the phenomenal amout of revenue that they get from smokers?
Same with alcohol, they want to control that too in order to cut down on younger people getting paraletic.
It is soon going to be like the prohibition in the States back in the 1930's
You know what they will do if they ban smoking completely......They will tax air in order to recoup their losses.
Can you imagine too, the stressed people that there will be out there....... without their cigi's they will be having to go to the doctors more to get medicines to stop the stress.
Also where are the government coming from, as they want us to stop smoking, but they encourage us to go to the doctor in order to get Niquitin or something similar...... that all costs on the NHS.
I think personally the whole lot of them in government or the EU have become total dictatorial NUMPTIES.

In California we had to go smoke outside for a while now. Even though I'm a smoker, I've never really minded this law. I've even met some really interesting people because of the law that I would have never met otherwise. You go outside, you ask for a light or bum a cigarette and then you start talking because some people smoke by themselves while their non-smoker friends are inside. It's not the same when you're inside because people are with friends, so the conversation rarely progresses beyond a "thanks for the light".

We have the smoking ban here in Scotland already and most of the pubs have put up awnings and heaters outside, so its not too bad. Business is not affected, people still like to drink and socialise.
The ban only refers to enclosed public places so of course you can still smoke in the street. The ban is to protect workers so if a workman is coming to your house you are not allowed when they are there or an hour before they come!!
I have also heard that teachers are not allowed to smoke in their cars on their way to work. Not sure if that is true.

I,m not a smoker but i think this law sucks, drinking and smoking in a pub adds to the atmosphere of the place, i would not like to be in a non smoking pub, and has for having to stand outside, who the f### wants to do that !!!!.
