'Tis the end of Winter and the beginning of the season of rebirth, Spring and the festival of Ostara falls on this day. Ostara, the holiday sacred to the Goddess for whom the modern Easter is named. She is a fertility Goddess and her symbols are the hare and the egg. She was an important Goddess of spring to the ancient Saxons.

Well, many Pagan paths find the Vernal Equinox important because it's the time of year when the earth is metaphorically reborn from Winter into Spring and things begin growing. It's a celebration of the cycles of the earth. For myself, I look at Spring as a time for new growth and enlightenment, and therefore I hold my annual Rite to Lucifer during the Vernal Equinox. Not only in celebration of the earth's natural renewel process, but in celebration of new beginnings and new growth. It's also associated with fertility.

Here's a website that gives a wonderful overview of the Vernal Equinox and its importance in numerous traditions:

This is Ostara, we celebrate the spring and the new planting (if we had a garden). We usually do fun spring stuff with the kids (like dying eggs, and planting seeds, and lots of playing outside) and we have a big party with lots of fresh fruits and veggies. It is part of the cycle of the year and is a big relief after being cooped up all winter with little ones.

All equinoxes are important because it represents a perfect balance between light and darkness.

I do not have any religious references though.
