From the Greek apologia, "a speech in defense", from apologeisthai "to speak in one's defense," from apologos "an account, story"

The meaning of expressing regret for a wrong did not come into the vernacular until the 18th Century.

as above mentioned. the etymology being:
apo=from and logos=speech. the whole meaning being one who speaks after the accusation in ordre to defend himself. this "apo" has also the meaning of "completely" and in this counts means "a full speech".
apologeisthai means i defend my self, whereas apologein used to mean i speak on behalf of another.
apologia is the speech. apologos the one who defends self. apologitirion was the room where the defendant held the speech.
