i would like to add that a feeler gauge can give minor variations in reading when used by different persons.("feel" as the name suggests). therefore to get accurate readings one person should take a reading and the other should verify.

A feeler gauge is a set of wires or pieces of metal that are a calibrated thickness. I have used my feeler gauge to "gap" my car's spark plugs. For example if the gap for the spark plug is supposed to be .045inches then I make sure that the feeler gauge wire labeled .045 inches just fits through the gap.

Important thing in using a feeler guage is not to force it into the gap being measured. The largest gauge size that fits smoothly without forcing is the correct measurement.

Feeler gages are precision calibrated strips of metal or wires used in a "go-no go" method of determining gaps between surfaces. The largest gage or combination of gages which will slide into the gap is a measure of the width of the gap.
