A dark brown, salty food paste made from yeast extract, It is similar to the British Marmite and Swiss Cenovis, and is mainly used as a spread on sandwiches and toast, though occasionally used in cooking.
Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste is difficult to describe but is extremely salty and slightly bitter, and as might be expected, malty, similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth, resembling margarine, although somewhat firmer and sticky.

Vegemite is actually a by product of the beer making process. After the yeast has caused the barley to ferment it is removed from the beer. The inactive eyast is very high in vitamin b and othr nutrients so scientists spent ages trying to find a way to use it. Vegemite is made from a combination of this yeast, vegetables and spices. It's definately an aquired taste and there is an exact science to working out how much to spread :)
I love it

Vegemite is an aussy food, but over the years it has come to be known as an australian icon. It is a spread made from yeast extract that is leftover from beer brewing but don't get your hopes up,(LOL) that doesn't make it alcoholic. Vegemite's creators figured that the yeast extract was a very valuable source of vitamins; add to that the various spices and vegetable extracts, and it's creators fulfilled their goals to create a highly nutritional and tasty spread. Vegemite has a solid consistency similar to that of butter, but it's heavier, and it's a very dark brown. I tried it once and all i have to say is that u have to have an aquired taste!!!

I used to eat when I was little and it really is an acquired taste, it is a familiar taste to me but, to say it is tasty would be a lie. My kids find it revolting and can't understand why I eat it on toast but I really am used to it and it is very good for you. Here is an excerpt from an advertisement.
Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives. It is very dark reddish-brown, almost black, in color, and one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B. It's thick like peanut butter, it's very salty, and it tastes like - well let's just say that it is an acquired taste!

Vegemite is a traditional Australian spread, made from yeast products. It is black, shiny and salty, and is used very sparingly on toast, with lots of nice hard butter. Yum!!!
