I dont want to sound like a brat, but they always say they want my respect, but i cant find anything to respect them for. Theyre very irresponsible, rarely pay bills, and when we get food stamps they waste them on junk food! So how can they expect me to respect them? How can i work on not fighting with them?

My mother was the same way and to this day I still find it hard to respect her. But you also need to understand that they are your parents and sometimes it's necessary to give a little respect to get some in return.

You don't have to worship them or sign your mom up for a mother of the year award. Simply be more courteous, don't snipe, be civil. And try to remember, being an adult isn't easy, and being a parent most definitely is not easy, sometimes the stupid and irresponsible choices in life are the easiest to make.

Just think of them as a how NOT to be guide. It will help you to be a better person in the long run.

You can't so don't beat yourself up over it, you can't force yourself to respect anyone. respect comes from admiration, if you don't admire them, you can't respect them. look at the bright side, you didn't indicate your age , but i am assuming at least 15, so what do you have ? 3 more years until you are done with them and you can do anything you want. youth is fleeting and yours will be gone soon enough. just enjoy your youth and when you get to be a parent you may find some respect for them, some kids would kill to live off of junk food.
or to at least live with their parents and have 2 parents in the home. you aren't going around hungry or naked so they are taking care of you.

Hi Pixie. Truth is, nobody can make another "respect them". One has to earn respect, it can't be demanded. People who say they want respect usually don't have any respect for themselves. If you respect yourself, you don't need respect from others, if you don't like yourself, then there is the tendency to search for identity and validation from other people. How can you deal with parents? By recognizing they are probably doing the best they can. Don't judge them for how they live. Spend your time learning to love and honor and respect yourself.

Here's something for you...
My Mother always used to tell me "If you want Respect, you must give Respect, and if you are Older than you MUST Give Respect first as you are wiser and should know better."
But, she also used to tell me "Do as I say, not as I do."
I Know it is hard to Respect your Parents, But, that is just part of growing up.
I always say "Be the better person." Makes you feel GREAT!!
EDIT: Well said JudgeBill and MRSLuzious....!!

I can relate a bit but understand that your parents are still trying to raise you some families just get ride of their child because they dont wish to take care of them, in terms of not fighting with them just try to stay to yourself alittle bit or talk to them about how you feel and if you eat at a table for dinner try to only focus on things that dont spark the arguments that take place in your house.
