I am getting a Bassett hound puppy and was wondering what they are like. What kind of temperment do they have, do they shed, smell bad...........all that sort of stuff? I have a 3 yr old boxer and a 9 month old wolf/malamute mix, will the Basset get along with them?

I have had bassets for the last 15 years. Bassets can be stubborn, willful and a bit hard to train but they give back so much love and loyalty. Bassets get along well with other dogs, so I don't think you will have a big problem there, actually they do best when they have a canine companion. Bassets do shed, and some brushing is required to keep that under control. Some bassets have what is best called a "hound" smell, some do not. Watch your new bassets ears closely, if they develop a yeast or earthy smell you will want to get some lessons in ear cleaning techniques from your vet as well as some ear flushing liquid.

Most importantly a new basset is going to be as busy as any other kind of puppy, into things, being a bit naughty. They are not laid back, easy going dogs all the time, although some tend to grow into that.

Bassets are good dogs! He should get along with your other pets.

Yes he will shed. Little tiny hairs every where, but you already have a malamute, you should be used to the hair by now! Don't believe what people say, ALL DOGS SHED in one way or another! Even those ones that aren't suppose to! I have one 'non shedding' dog. Yeah he doesn't shed one hair at a time, but he does leave white clumps all over the house!

Grooming is very important for these dogs. The ears are especially prone to smelling and infection. They get rather dirty and need some regular maintenance (cleaning like twice a week or so).

They have a very good temperament! They are clumsy, goofy dogs. Great addition to any loving, responsible family!

A basset hound is generally a very good tempered dog and gets along well with other dogs. They are short haired and do not tend to shed very much. The down side is they tend to have a strong hound odor and their ears on the inside must be cleaned regularly.

Bassetts seem to like everybody so I imagine they mix well with other animals, too. And those ears! You'll be able to throw-away your dust-mop.

I strongly recommend you do the research on the breed before you actually decide to get the puppy.
Yes, they are great looking, but there is more to dogs than just their appearance.
