People bless sneezers because way back when it was believed that the force of a sneeze made your soul leave your body, you had to be blessed before the devil stole your soul. Since burping does not evict your soul, "excuse you" is still the polite thing to say.

In some cultures, it is a high compliment when someone burps after a meal. So the common thing to say after someone has burped, upon finishing a meal that you have prepared is.....Thank You Very Much!

As for the sneeze....depending on how good it was.....*WoW, there goes $100.00 down the drain* (or whatever dollar amount seems appropriate at the moment)

I would say "excuse-meeeeeeeee" in a sarcastic tone. Maybe then they will apologize. Burping is rude. I always say I'm sorry if I burp in public.

I know my friend's extended family, and everyone in her husband's family burps a lot, and they laugh loudly afterwards. I find it rude, but I was forewarned by my friend not to say anything before I met all of them for the first time.

I guess I'm no expert on etiquette, but I think it depends on the situation whether or not you should say anything. Sneezing is often an uncontrollable reflex, whereas burping can be supressed, so if it isn't, that's just plain rude.

"Excuse you" is what I say when my kids fail to say "Excuse me" on their own. I think that works, and no bless you is out of the question. Not for a burp.

I try to ignore the burp. Usually I think they are rude, since some people don't even try to make it quiet or cover their mouth. As far as I'm concerned the people that show no courtesy when burping, might as well just fart in public. Burping in a noisy manner is just plain rude. Ignore them.

Oddly enough - for that I say bless you too. And sometimes I tell someone who sneezes to shut up.

But - don't go by me, I call all small animals "pups", including humans.

"You are excused" is the proper thing to say. When someone burps, the polite comment for the person to make afterward is "Excuse me."

I would hope the person that burps would say "excuse me". Like when someone farts.

hopefully they will say excuse me or something else appropriate and you can just ignore it or if you feel compelled to say something a quick, "no problem" would be okay.

i understand how it can be confusing. my little boy is 4 and he doesn't understand why we don't say anything when someone coughs. he now insists that you say "bless you" when coughing occurs too. :)

take care,
SD
