Mental Illness is not something that we have a choice in.First you have to have the symptoms of mental illness .An example is depression....the signs and symptoms of depression are loss of sleep, lack of appetite, withdrawing from friends and relatives, loosing interests ,unmotivated, things that used to make you happy no longer make you happy, crying all the time, feelings of doom and gloom ,to name a few.You could have a chemical imbalance, your seratonin level is low (this causes one to be depressed) If you think you have a depression you need to visit your doctor ,get a thorough check up and then he should refer you to a psychiatrist. He will then determine if you have a depression.(he consults with the DSM IV book ) may prescribe you anti-depression medication. You may also benefit by going to a depression group. How to avoid the triggers of depression ....Try not to fill your life with too many stressors, and stay away from alcohol, and drugs they are a depressant, smoking marijuana is a temporary great feeling, but if you have a mental illness it may make you feel much worse .Please check with your Mental Health Department ,they have literature about mental illness that you can learn about .You can always call a Distress Line in your area if you are troubled by depression ,anxiety and so on. You don't have to go it alone ,there are many others out there just like you. Good Luck

To avoid mental depression we should first know the reasons causing it. By avoiding the reasons causing mental depression we can stay away from it. Apart from this keeing yourself engaged in some recreational or creative activity helps a lot as the saying goes " an idle mind is a devil's workshop " ... so keeping yourself and your mind preoccupied and busy with sorts of other activity will focus you and will prevent your mind from sinking into depression !

A new study published in the February 15, 2005 issue of Biological Psychiatry shows that certain foods are better at treating depression than antidepressant drugs. The study found that omega-3 fatty acids and foods high in a compound called uridine were able to reduce the symptoms of depression as well as or better than three different antidepressant drugs that were tested. This research was conducted at the McLean Hospital, which is affiliated with Harvard. It's very exciting to see this kind of study, because it shows yet more scientific evidence for the healing effects of food as well as the relative uselessness of prescription drugs

It cant always be avoidable.. mental depression is sometimes the result of a chemical imbalance and the only way to treat it is to restore the harmony and balance and increase levels of serotonin.
There are ways to avoid and deal with stress that may trigger depression though.

well if your family has a history of it there is really no way of avoiding it
well actually you can't really avoid depression at all,all you can do is live your life
and some people may believe that if you have faith in "god" then you won't get it but the truth is you can be the most popular person in school have really good grades or have a really good job good spouse and children or you could be completly happy but one day you may wake up and be depressed that is literally how it works one day you're fine then the next morning you wake up and you just can't take life
so hope I helped

I'm fighting it myself right now. I know that it helps me to push myself to do the things that I should do and push myself to go out and be among people I know love me and just be there among them even if I am not feeling anything from them.
I keep going to do my daily walks-that helps a lot. I keep studying for my classes. I keep going to church and calling my mom. For me these are big.
Cause I just WANT to go to bed and not get up. I just want to die. I just want to quit everything and give in. BUT I am not doing any of those things, I am doing what I should do even if it's on auto-pilot.

Don't let things that you can't do anything about or change get to you.
We are human beings, not God, so leave it alone and live your life as best you can and strive to be the best person you can be!!
Be thankful for what you have and prayful for what you want or need.
