Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is utilised by the body to form cartilage. It's commonly taken to both relieve and prevent pain associated with joint problems, including osteoporosis.

Glucosamine by itself is not particularly stable, so it's joined onto another atom or molecule to result in a more stable salt form. Two widely available forms of glucosamine are:
i) glucosamine sulfate (SO4)
ii) glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl)

The sulfate form tends to be more promoted, as the sulfur moeity may have some benefits in patients taking it for bone conditions. But a wide number of clinical studies have been based on glucosamine hydrochloride.

If your son has an allergy to sulfur, it's advised that he avoid all sulfur-containing medications (including some non-steroidal anti-inflammatories eg. celebrex [ie. celecoxib]). However, as the doctor has prescribed, glucosamine may provide some benefit - in that case it is recommended that you seek glucosamine products using glucosamine hydrochloride.

Nb: due to the different molecular weights between sulfate vs hydrochloride, the dosage may differ - consult your doctor to ensure the dose is based on glucosamine base.

As I thought glucosamine does not even contain sulfur.

Also the alergy to Sulfa drugs probably has nothing to do with Sulfur.

Sulfa is one of the additives that they put in medications. Sulfur is a powdery substance that is used to kill insects in your yard. I think that is the difference between the two.
