I have a 2001 sunfire I bought used it had 100,000 miles on it when I got it, I put 40,000 miles on it. It now has 140,000 miles on it.I think the trans may be having trouble. Should I buy a new car?

Errg...your car has probably reached it's life limit. The Sunfire/Cavalier are decent automobiles, but not GREAT ones and are not built to last much over 100K. Unless yours is in very good condition and the engine seems tight and the body components are all in working order I would say you will be money ahead to trade-up. Keep in mind that you could probably purchase a used transmission for about $900.00 and have it installed for about another $500.00. Just a thought...

I think you're throwing good money after bad. The car has a lot of mileage on it; I'd try selling it privately or possibly trading it in on another used vehicle. With 140,000 on the clock you won't get much for it, but anything you do get should be considered "gravy"; I'd definitely not put any more than
$ 750 in repairs into it at this point as you'll never recoup your investment.

That being said, if you have a sentimental attachment to it, go ahead and have it checked over; it may NOT be the transmission, but could be any number of other minor (or not so minor) problems (including the timing belt).

Unless the vehicle is otherwise premo it's time to unload it. A trans-rebuild will easily cost two to three grand. If it still moves you should get no less than three grand trade-in (maybe much more).

Do the math! 140,000 miles is a lot of miles on a domestic car. Better yet, go green. Gas prices will keep going up throughout the summer.

Pontiac's are notorious for breaking down around 100/150 thousand miles. As soon as you dish out more money for the trans something else will break. Same thing happened with my grand am. Tranny went out then parts of the engine started failing. Turned out to be more money than the car was worth.

About $2,000 to rebuild the trannie.. I think with that many miles on a Sunfire I would be looking for something only a couple of years old with under 50k on it.. and put your money towards that.. If you fix the trannie the motor may be next.

i own a repair shop, and from what you just said about it i don't think id put a lot of money in to it,at all, with the mileage it already has on it,probably will be giving engine problems later on,so id consider selling it,and buying another one,the mileage is whats going to hurt that one ,even if you put a lot in to it,you wont get it back out of it.so it would totally be up to you ,if you like the car that much, and its a good car, then repair it,and if not id be on the look out for another one, good luck, i hope this helps.

Do you want a new car? Or at least a different one? If so, then I wouldn't put any more money into it because it's not worth that much. See if you can sell it AS IS to someone .

only you can answer this question. A rebuilt tranny for your car would cost more than the car is worth. I would opt to buy another car but it wouldn't be new as you would loose to much just buying it
