Oh, you mean that! I was going to say "some adults never even reach the age of reason" -- LOL. But the rest of your question requires different answer..
In a religious sense -- It really depends on which religion. In the Jewish Faith, children become adults in the eyes of the church at 12. The services surrounding this event are a real milestone. Other religions have different customs and different milestones at different age levels.
The "legal" age of reason, when a child reaches adulthood in the eyes of the law is consistent throughout the U.S. and it is at the age if 18.
And you reach adulthood in the eyes of your parents when you have your own job and start picking up the check in the restaurant.

In the Catholic Church, the age of reason is 7.
Edit: Although, Catholics become "full" or "adult" members in the Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Catholic Children usually recieve this sacrament around 12-13.

My 7 year old is beginning to question and look for his purpose and belief.
I don't want to hold him back, but I don't want him to make a decision he doesn't fully understand either. This is to me a young start so I have just advised him that making a commitment is a serious, serious matter. That you don't do it because your friends do or because your parents do. That you need to read and think and pray a lot until you are sure and you understand before you commit.

That's a good question, I suppose it would depend on the child. Not everyone matures at the same rate. This needs some serious consideration.

(It seems that people never become adults until both their parents have died. - I am not saying that is good or bad, it just seems to be the way it is. ..... In regards to church, it seems most people just play the game of "church" until there is a death in their family.)
