Hi Guys. If I have a chance to go skiing at Lake Loiuse or FERNIE BC, which would be the preferred choice?? I am not really into the crowds in Banff..but the best skiing is the ultimate goal. I HATE groomed trails. I like lots of powder and glades and that type of thing.

Thanks in advance

Fernie for sure. i was there last week (mar 7-8) and it was incredible. more snow predicted in the next few days. there are no lines and far better snow than Lake Louis. and less expensive as well. in the last couple of years they have opened up a lot of new terrain so making fresh tracks is not hard to do. the bowls and glades are huge and offer a challenge for everyone. i live in Cranbrook (an hour west of Fernie) and ski Kimberley, Panarama, and Golden regularly as well, but Fernie has the best snow this year.
have a blast and make some turns for me.

I have been to Lake Louise, and enjoyed it very much, but that's because I had a combo ticket that worked at Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, or Norquay. It was a very affordable deal, and the skiing was great, but crowded. The ungroomed areas ended up more or less groomed because of heavy traffic. The thing is, I live in Wisconsin, and have my whole life, so I haven't grown up around mountains. That means I am not the best authority on great skiing mountains. I do have cousins who live in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. They (obviously) know the Canadian Rockies very well, and their favorite skiing destination happens to be Fernie.
This is off the subject, but I just want to say that I really liked Lake Louise. Great skiing, compareable to Aspen or Vail, but I found the ski area crowd in Western Canada to be A TON more enjoyable to share a mountain with than the crowd around Aspen. The skiers in Canada were there to go skiing, have a good time, and mingle with other skiers. The skiers in Aspen seem to be there to look down their noses at as many people as possible, and drive the most environmentally irresponsible vehicles possible. Way to go, Canada! Thanks for being so welcoming and hospitable!

Often the best is harder to get to and doesn't have the groomed slopes. If you hate crowds, go to the one with the least reputation for crowds. Usually crowds DO prefer groomed, so that would solve that question. If you like ungroomed, then I imagine the weather is irrelavant as it usually is with people who like to SKI, not pose. Have fun, wish I could be there too.....LOL!

I haven't skied either, but a friend recently went to Lake Louise, and said that it was hellishly cold.

It might have warmed up a bit by now, but if you go there, be prepared for the intense cold.
