Italian is closest. Both have Latin roots, however as Latin is a dead language, it does not have many words used for modern purposes.

Latin, now considered a dead language, could well be the mother of French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian (collectively known as the romance languages).
And since these languages are "siblings" they do have similarities, both in form and structure, some more pronounced than others. And at the same time, each of these languages also share some characteristics with their mother, Latin. But like anything else, languages evolve and as they do, they become less and less like their mother and
their sibblings.
The answer to your question: Spanish is closer to Italian. It is difficult to compare any language to Latin now because Latin has stopped evolving - it's dead!
Ciao!

Italian is closer to Spanish than Latin, no doubts !!
I'm Italian and I know Latin. I'm also speaking Spanish and French (so I'm aware of the differences among all these languages).
French is the most distant from original Latin among all the Latin's origin languages.

Italian. My girlfriend is fluent in Spanish and heard some woman on the subway speaking Italian and got very confused. I'm nearly fluent in Latin and I can't keep up with either as a spoken language.

Italian is the answer. here's why: both italian and spanish came from latin, but italian came first, so spanish is closer to it than the mother language
