I also hear them say the sunni and the shiite, and then I hear the sunni and the shia,are there three different tribes or two?

Shia is the sect, a person of the shia faith is known as a shiite. Sunni is another sect. A person of the sunni faith is known as a sunni.

Sunni and Shiite. Sunni are more fundamentalists while the shiites are a little looser in policy. I don't know how much information you want but if you go to www.religioustolerance.org you can find some really good info.

Sunni Muslims, or Sunnis, follow the Sunna, the religious traditions practiced by Muhammed in addition to the Quran. They also accept the elected successors of the Prophet rather than the family line of succession.

The Shi‘a or Shi‘ite Muslims accept the familial order of succession. Shi'a literally means "followers of Ali", who was the son-in-law of Muhammed.

Both of these groups have sub-branches but they are the main "denominations" of Islam. Another branch is Sufi, which is more mystical than mainstream Islam (sort of the "Zen" version).

Kurds are nominally Muslims, although no outsiders know what they actually believe and practice.
