If someone shot your dog what would you do?
Besides call cops- what other steps would you take to make sure the person pays.

she was shot for no reason-she was acutally in the road. The one we think did it is a convicted felon.

The cop thing would obviously cover creating a police report of the incident. Having witnesses that will testify in court will always help but this is not always easy to get/do since a lot of people dont want to get involved, this is the typical no one saw anything syndrome.
So first get everything documented vet bills, police report etc. Then you take steps to take them to court so that they pay for all the damages, its harder to get a good estimate on the non-money things like the quality of life for your pet, the stress you got put through etc.
Most cities do not allow the lawful discharge of a firearm within city limits so that person can be in trouble for that alone if there were indeed witnesses. Some cities have strict laws against handguns, some on concealed weapons without a permit.
If a person owns firearms they must be responsible and be able to prove that they may have used it in a case where they were being attacked or thought their life was in danger. If your dog was attacking someone then you may not have any defense, if it was loose and your city requires dogs to be leased and fenced in you may not have any defense. So in cases like that you might get in trouble.
The situation that the shooting happened in will probably dictate the outcome of your case.

I had this happen. My yellow lab was shot in the leg with a pellet. I don't know who did it, however it happened on an early Sunday morning back behind the house. There are only a few neighbors, and I think I know who did it. But I can't prove it. I didn't even know he was shot for a week. He's a pretty active dog and sometimes he's strain a leg and limp for a day, so that's what happened when he can back. But the limp didn't go away. The vet took an x-ray and I was shocked. He's the sweetest dog. But as for what I did...I keep an extra eye on him. I let the neighbor know I think he may have done it. But short of taking the law into my own hands, that's all you can do. Remember two wrongs don't make a right.

You can actually file a personal lawsuit. Wouldnt shooting your dog be considered distruction of private property? (I dont know that for sure, but I am sure there is a way.
Also, contact your local animal enforcement agency they will also be able to file cruelty charges.
But one question. Is there a reason your dog got shot? Does it run wild, bark constantly, attack others pets or children? I have a neighbor with 2 of the most untrained, irritating dogs. They are the WORSE pet owners!! There are a couple of times I wanted to get a sniper riffle and pick those yiping dogs off from the upstairs window! (Dont worry, I wouldnt ever actually do it, I couldnt hurt an animal no matter how annoying they are!!!)

Whether you would win could depend on the circumstances
for example in most of US and Canada if a dog enter onto a farmers property it can very viewed as dangerous feral dog or a threat to livestock in which case a farmer has the legal right to shoot it, In a case like this if livestock has been harmed or killed going to court might only bring you more grief because a court could order the dog put down and you would be fined for having an animal at large and order to make restititution to the farmer for his losses instead.
If the dog was on your property at the time of the shooting than you would have a good chance of winning if you could prove (for eg a witness)

First of all take your dog to the vet. The injury might be serious. Was your dog shot on purpose?? You need to make out a police report and contact the Animal Humane Society, there should be one in your area if you live in the US. But before you do all this you should have enough evidence on this person. If I am not mistaken animal cruelty in a crime.

I'd like to think this is a felony in your State. Regardless of how the offense rates, the police need to be notified AND I would also let your local animal pound know about it as well as the Humane Society and the SPCA because some pounds and shelters are able to "pursue" animal cruelty cases.
I hope your dog is ok!

I would alert the local humane society and get that person listed as a threat to animals. Certainly, they might also have some additional resources, legal or otherwise.
You might also want to research your local gun laws to see if the shooting's proximity to people was possibly a violation of that law as well.

i imagine it truly is alright to cry over that. As an animal lover myself my heart breaks each and anytime I see or listen or tale like this, or any tale related to animal cruelty. I save in ideas even as i became about 11 years previous i became watching the data with my mom even as a narrative got here on about a community pound. The animal preserve became in difficulty- they were stuck shoving stay dogs and cats into something resembling a large storage chest. there became a tractor hooked as a lot because it, and they could turn it on and the fumes from the tractor could pump into the 'field' the animals were in. a number of them died a terrible death, even as others laid in there for days, subconscious and no longer stated by technique of preserve workers even as they piled more suitable on. It confirmed the 'field' the position the pups, kittens, dogs, and cats were at....and positively maximum of them were lifeless. It jogged my memory of what got here about to such truly some human beings contained in the Holocaust. I ran out of the room bawling my eyes out. fortuitously my mom understood and comforted me. She informed me that she became proud that I loved animals that a lot. and that i too felt like you, it felt like those undesirable lifeless animals were my personal pets. and that i believe you, it truly is no longer honest that individuals made that threat free domestic dog advise. it truly is totally uncommon even as a dogs is born with a organic aggression. only understand that he's in a more suitable positive position, the position no you'll damage him anymore. I do exactly not understand the way human beings can stand there like that, like it truly is large leisure. save on worrying about animals, and perhaps faster or later you are able to make a distinction. the global needs more suitable human beings like you! : )

Unfortunately if it was on there property they get away with it. I released my dog to use the bathroom and he went to neighbors and they shot him. Called animal control and went to court. I lost. If he was on your property, call animal control, the police will connect you. Please get them for there cruelty.
Leash laws are different in each state. When you call ask them what the leash law for your state is.

I would call the police because there is really nothing else you could do, except to ask him to pay you or something, it really depends whether the dog died or not...
