if someone has a cyst, can they just take a sharp needle and poke a hole at it and drain it?

Well they can but it is not a very advisable thing to do at all, if they are going to do it anyway they should wash the area really well with soap and water and then rub alcohol, and after poking it do the same, but really it should not be done. MY friend has one on her upper back and she always had her husband poke it and get alot of the fluid out, well she ended up getting a staph infection all thru her body and the dr said it was from her having her husband poke the cyst and it got infected -and a staph infection is bad, she could barely walk because her legs were swollen from the infection -so the dr is the best one to treat this problem.

That is really, no.....REALLY stupid thing to do. Opening a cyst, especially with a needle, opens up the possibility of serious infections, and possible complications, such as blood poisoning, etc. There are different types of cysts, too, some more dangerous than others. Go to a physician. That is what they are there for. They can give you good advice on how to treat a condtion like that.

Sometimes it will help to drain, but usually the contents are to thick to drain. A cyst is actually a small sac-like pocket under the skin. It will continue to comeback unless surgically removed.

I really would not, you could get an infection and you have a high risk of scarring.
