UPDATE - Sunday she had no visible blood in her urine that I could tell. But she continues to squat several times to pee and nothing comes out except the first time. I have talked to the vet and he said it sounded like a bladder infection, but could be stones or other problems. My husband is taking her by the vet this afternoon after work. I'll let you know what he says. THANKS TO ALL who answered!!

Final update -- my dog is okay -- UTI or bladder infection. Vet did not find any kidney stones and the bleeding was just the one day. She is now on antibiotics and doing much better. Again Thanks to all...

My older shih tzu had the same problem. It ended up being a bladder infection that was easily treatable with antibiotics from the vet. It cleared up within a week.

Oh dear. I hate to tell you this (and it DOES NOT mean yours has the same problom) but we just put my 10 yr old German Shepard down because of that. She had the same symptoms for a long time. We kept going to the vets and they kept giving her anti-biotics for a UTI which would help for a bit, then would come back. She had a really hard time going pee and seemed to take a really long time to go pee (she seemed to strain so much after awhile).
So the last time I took her for yet another bout of anti-biotics, the vet said she would take an X-ray to see if Jazz had a stone. She took the X-ray and sadly, she had bladder cancer. It was extremly difficult since she was so healthy looking on the outside and we had a VERY hard time euthenizing her, but she would never get better and she was in HUGE pain everytime she went pee. We couldn't let her go on like that either.
I sincerely hope that this isen't the case with yours but when I saw that she had the strings of mucos of blood as well,...it made me think of our girl who had the same symptoms.
I really hope all is well with her. Take her to the vet and ask for an X-ray. They can tell from that and should tell you w/o going through all the costly tests.
Again, I truly hope that she is fine and it is only a UTI.
Please let us know......I'll keep this question as a star question. Hopefully, you'll let us know and you can "edit" your question.
Good luck again...and Bless your pup!!

Please, take her to the vet soon, that is exceedingly painful (I had an UTI myself, speaking from experience!). She probably has an UTI or bladder stones causing erosion and bleeding. Cancer of the bladder also causes bleeding, but that is pretty rare. If she is not spayed, it can be a pyometra. It may even be a bleeding disorder from other type of cancer she is developing, it can be just about anything at that old age. Your vet will need to do an analysis of the urine so try to not walk her before taking her to the clinic. The urine should be relatively fresh, so don't bother collecting 20 hours before the visit. They may also want to take an urine culture under aseptic conditions, so urine in any container won't do. And lots of water and walks to make her feel more comfortable.

UTI? If it's pink and not a lot of blood, it might be that bladder infection. Still, finding blood in anything isn't a good sign. Take your doggie to the vet.

Probably a bladder or urinary tract infection. She's in a little bit of pain, mostly just discomfort, so keep her as comfortable as possible. Make sure she drinks plenty of water. Take her to the vet as soon as you can to get some antibiotics.

Blood in the urine is a sign of a problem that cant be treated by yourself.
With a dog this old, you should never second guess yourself or try to self treat. I will normally be the first to give you suggestions, but in your case I suggest seeking advise from a vet.

Honestly i dont know what the exact problem could be, because it could be anumber of harmful and BAD things that NEED to be taken care of asap. You need to take this dog to a vet immediatly especially because of her age, im concerned that your dog may not be in a very stable condition because of her age and she may die soon. Don't wait any longer to take her, there is nothing you can do without professional help and i do not doubt that she is in very much pain right now.

I would think urinary tract infection, but none of us are veternarians.. whatever it is, with her being the age she is, it's more than likely serious.. take her to the vet as soon as one opens. Hope all turns out well.. I'm a poodle lover with a 4 pound tiny toy myself!

Not a vet, but when my dog had blood in urine, it was kidney infection. When he had blood coming from his hind end, he had colon cancer. I would take my dog to the vet, especially an elderly one. Good luck!

Take her to the vet!!! She probably has a urinary tract infection and possibly bladder stones... we just went through this with our pug and it was expensive and harrowing. Trust me, DO NOT wait for this to become a dire emergency, it will cost you even more.
