Sound Recorder (part of Windows XP) will record from a mike, but I believe it will only record for 30 seconds at a time.
I use a program called SOUNDFORGE. You can get a 30 day trial download at SONY's site online.
Also, when recording you need to remember to "activate" your microphone as your input device. Double click on the volume icon down by your clock, then click on OPTIONS and select PROPERTIES, then select RECORDING. This will bring up several "slider" bars. Make sure to check the box marked SELECT under the MICROPHONE slider to activate it. Don't forget to adjust the slider up or down to adapt to the volume you will be feeding into it.

Windows Movie Maker has a recording feature installed. it will save the file as .wma. Or you can get Cool Edit Sound or Sound Forge

In windows there is a sound recorder you can record with it for 1min but if you want more install Jet audio it can record without limitation .
