I woke up one morning with no hearing in one ear. Then the hearing came back slightly and now it hurts. The hearing loss is still significant. When I put my hand over the ear it echos. Could it be wax buildup? It is sore inside.

Don't fool around when it comes to your ears,go see the doctor. Are you on pain medication?Often pain killers in the vicodin family will cause these type of symptoms and can make you lose your hearing.(vicodin,norco,lortab,hydrocodone,etc....

It could be but it sounds more like an ear infection. Time for a trip to the doctor. In the meantime, you could put something warm (heating pad) just behind and under your earlobe to relax the muscles there. It helps the pain. Feel better.

Due to the pain I would bet that you have an infected ear. Best to go and get it checked out by a ear doctor very soon.

This sorta happened to me last week, but not so sudden...it's probably an ear infection, go to the doctor, and he'll give you an antibiotic prescription. Good luck!
