I have a cat that is about 1 year old. Lately she has been acting, for lack of a better word, drunk. She eats well and plays hard, but she is very uncoordinated and walks strange even to the point of falling over. I haven't been able to take her to the vet yet. I think that she may have neurological damage because I was broken into and the people that did it may have either physically hurt her or traumatized her. Any suggestions other than that as to what may be wrong? Thanks for your help.

She may have an ear infection. This would account for the imbalance, just as it would for us humans.

Hi there i think you are right it sounds to me as though your cat is having neurological episodes. It maybe from a trauma to the head or it could be some kind of seizure. This age is a good age to start seeing epileptic episodes if the cat is going to have them.
I have never heard of FIV causing neurological damage or Ataxia. It is a disease that affects the immune system somewhat like humans.

I would be writing a diary as to when this happens over the next few days until you can see a vet. I am glad he is happy and playing and eating and drinking as usual. But you can understand this is not a normal state for a young cat and really requires a professional opinion.
She could just have an ear infection causing the symptoms, as that can happen also.

Good luck

The advice you have received to take your cat to the vet is right on target. This is not normal behavior, and could indicate a serious disorder. You didn't say why you haven't been able to take her to the vet yet, but I would make it a priority. If money is an issue, I would just be up front with the doctor and ask him to arrange some sort of payment plan.

I am sorry for the break-in and sincerely hope your cat was not victimized during this episode.

Best to you, and I wish you and your pet well.

If they did infact hurt her she could have bleeding on her brain or some neurological problem like that. If she's just stumbling around and seems like she has no balance it could be a middle ear infection also, which can be treated relatively easily. Take her to a vet ASAP, they're the only ones that can really tell you whats going on

Gosh, you really need to take your cat to a good vet as soon as possible.

FIV can sometimes cause ataxia (lack of balance) and I'm sure other illnesses as well.

Ingesting certain poisons, such as antifreeze can cause neurological problems, as well.

You need to find out if what she has is treatable, so that you can begin treatment at once.

Best of luck - I've got my paws crossed for her :)

Aside from the obvious answer....to the vet, my best guess is one of two things....
1. An inner ear problem. Seems your cat has no balance, and thats where balance is controlled.
2. Have you ever put your cat on a leash? When mine are leashed, or have someonething stuck to them, they walk crooked and into walls. Is something stuck in its fur....a string or tie of sorts?

I bet you it is an ear infection. That interferes with a cat's sense of balance. Take kitty to the vet.

She might have gotten into something she shouldn't have. Or, have you put flea stuff on her lately? My mom once put too much flea stuff on a cat, and it about killed it! It's really easy to overdose a cat. Who ever broken in might have given something to her as a HORRIBLE joke... I'd consult a vet if it doesn't improve really soon!

I would say clearly from these answers, you need a good vet's opinion. Take her tomorrow.
