Run for a week and establish a minimum you can do, then push it one minute a day beyond that until you reach your target.
Or, just go the two miles at whatever speed you feel comfortable, and try to beat your time every day.
If you're going to be in a race, I would go THREE miles - that way, if you're having an off day you can always say to yourself "I go three miles a day, and though I'm tired I KNOW I can make it at least TWO."
You might also try running up a multi-story parking garage - conditions HARDER than your race will be.

A good program to start with a run\walk program. Start walking two minutes and run one minute. Do this for a total of 20 minutes if you can, maybe 4 to 5 days a week. As you get stronger, increase the running and decrease the walking. Soon you will be running two miles with no problems.

How much you can increase your stamina in several weeks is individual but IS very possible for most everyone. I suggest running very slow (jog) and rather than keeping track of distance, keep track of time. Start with the 15 minutes you are capable of and increase by 3-5 minutes every day. When you get to 40 - 45 minutes of non stop SLOW minutes of running - continue jogging daily for that time frame but add terrain (hills, grassy parks, trails). Most aerobic sports will increase stamina - especially soccer (football) but running is my "game" so there you have it... GOOD LUCK!

do more than just run, maybe a few sit-ups. Make sure you stretch plenty. My grandpa used to run marathons, and he said you should run at a speed where you can still talk comfortably and consistently. Eventually that speed will build up.
Also, try interval training, sprint all out for, say 1 minute, then jog at "talking speed" for 1 minute, then sprint again. Just don't stop moving, continue to run until your session is completed.

My husband is in the military. He told me to every other day do sprints for 30 seconds and jog a minute, for 'x' miles. then the next day do a slow paced jog. The sprints build your endurance
