Root mean square.

The root mean square is the maximum amount of power a set of speakers can handle over a given period of time. This is different from peak power, which is the maximum amount of power the speakers can handle at once.

The letters stand for"root mean square" .It means the speakers are suitable for use with amplifiers rated between a low minimum wattage for example 20 watts rms up to 200watts rms maximum usually into 8 ohms for the reproduction of speech and music. 200watts is a very high output which you could not listen to and the speakers are not designed to handel that amount of power all the time.20 to 50 watts per channel rms into 8 ohms will produce realistic sound levels in room volumes of up to 40 square metres.Dont bother about peak power it is an inflated power rating used by retailers to suck you in .It has no place in hi fidelity sound .Hope thi has helped you.

The way I understand it, RMS means the power that the speaker should be able to safely handle almost continuously. Peak power is what the speaker can safely handle for just a few seconds. Either way, be careful. Your ears may hurt bad before you reach the danger point of the speaker.

RMS stands for root mean square, which describes the average amount of power your speakers can handle over given amount of time. 200 watts for instance, means that your speakers can handle on average 200W, but the peak power means that 700W will blow your speaker. Hope this helps.

eg: 2x30 RMS output. This means that that 2 of the speakers have 30 watts each. and 2x30 is 60. So the total wattage of the speakers are 60 watts.
